A Wider Road Book
As I have spoken around the country talking about my journey as a Ragpicker, (especially my experience with Daniel King), I have been asked many times if I had written a book about it. The answer was always the same, "No." I came to understand it was the wrong answer after a business meeting in my conference room with and Daryl Stevenett and Mark Maxon. Mark is a radio talk show host and Daryl is a musician, and an entrepreneur; both are new friends and yes, they now wear Ragpicker Amulets and have registered on this website. Somehow during our business meeting, I ended up telling them about Daniel and our experience. As I told the story, Daryl was openly leaking profusely through both eyes. As we finished our meeting and Daryl was leaving, he firmly placed both hands on my shoulders, looked me straight in the eyes and said very slowly with a dramatic pause after every word, "YOU CANNOT GO TO YOUR GRAVE WITHOUT WRITING THIS STORY."
Something aligned inside of me. I "grew a brain." I knew he was right. It was time.
I launched the website first on March 4, 2010, (admittedly a little prematurely). This is an important date to me because:
- I am a huge Abraham Lincoln fan. His inaugural addresses for both terms were given on March 4th, the first in 1961 and the second in 1965. Also, Og Mandino describes his character Simon Potter (the first Ragpicker) with the same height and build as Lincoln and states that he looked "like a modern day Abraham Lincoln."
- March 4th also means MARCH FORTH! It’s not just a date or a number, it is a statement of action. We have much to do as Ragpickers. I wanted to launch date of Ragpicker.org to symbolize that we are advancing and are a group of action.
As of March 4th, I am almost done with the manuscript for the book and expect it to be complete and available for purchase in the next 60-90 days. As you cannot buy it yet,
I have placed little excerpts from my draft manuscript throughout the website.
