Fiji Read Project 2011

Rapicker.org is pleased to present our FIRST Ragpicker project. We are so proud to be part of this meaningful project and hope you will find it worthy of your effort or donation.

Project Objectives:

Take a group of 20 volunteers to Vanua Levu, Fiji, June 12-26th, 2011 in an effort to renovate and paint all classrooms and extend a classroom at Vuya District School and turn it into a functioning library with a couple of computers and donations of 3000 books for grades K-8 in English. We will be raising $10,000 for supplies, materials and sanitation systems (we will also be putting sanitation systems in Vuya Village). This village was the latest victim of typhoid fever. We are also working with Municipal Government on various other projects. Drawing an awareness of how citizens of all countries need each other through practical service projects.

Why Vuya District School?

Elizabeth Jarema, a registered Ragpicker at Ragpicker.org is the project manager and is the coordinator for a service expedition to Fiji, where Liz grew up. Liz attended Vuya District School as a child and would like to improve the literacy rate of today’s students by building a library. The school has approximately 500 students and only one dictionary. The current library at the schools contains only a small selection of EXTEREMLY WORN books (see pics below).

How YOU can help:

We need cash, books and volunteers who are handy with tools and “fix-it” jobs.

3 Easy Ways You Can Help

1. Make a simple tax deductible donation in any amount of your choice. (*Special thanks to UVU for their generous grant which has made this project possible).

2. Send books or start a book-drive with your friends, neighbors, work, church or scout group. We have a company who will ship the books for free to Fiji after we have collected them in Utah. Please send books to Ragpicker Headquarters: 45 East 200 North, Alpine UT, 84004. (All books have been donated we exceeded our goal thanks to Jason Meyer and his team at Thriftbooks.com…THANK YOU!)

3. Volunteer to come and join us on the service expedition! The cost for flight, food and accommodations is approximately $1,900 per volunteer. (*Over 20 volunteers have been selected thanks to the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center at UVU. A very warm sincere thank you to the volunteers and UVU www.uvu.edu/volunteer).

Hi there, just became aware of your blog through Google, and found that it’s truly informative. I am going to watch out for brussels. I’ll appreciate if you continue this in future. Numerous people will be benefited from your writing. Cheers!

  2. Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the web the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people consider worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. I must express my thanks to this writer just for bailing me out of this particular difficulty. Because of searching through the search engines and seeing notions that were not pleasant, I believed my entire life was done. Living without the presence of solutions to the issues you have solved by means of your entire review is a serious case, as well as ones that could have badly damaged my career if I had not encountered your blog. Your competence and kindness in taking care of almost everything was valuable. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I had not come upon such a step like this. It’s possible to at this time relish my future. Thanks for your time very much for the high quality and effective guide. I won’t think twice to suggest your web page to any person who needs and wants counselling about this situation.
